On the affirmative, BGC selected a good-looking, polished, articulate team led by Geoffrey Hammond, with Frank Stening & Beverley Clayton.
In opposition, Oxley College presented three able, intelligent & talented students, Laura Mathews, Anna Krista & Elliot Smith.
Some familiar, some not so familiar cliches, adapted to suit, peppered the debate.
Good looks are more than skin deep
Without a good brain, good looks are useless
Beauty is everything - ugliness cuts to the bone
It's the pearl inside the oyster that counts, pearls of wisdom!
He who marries beauty, marries trouble
Supporting their respective arguments we had a virtual history/cultural & political lesson. Jesus Christ, Ghandi, Mohammed, Michelangelo, Napoleon, Mother Teresa, Aphrodite & Princess Diana. All were mentioned in context, to support a particular point.
On the local front, according to the BGC team it was Maxine McKew's beauty that usurped John Howard at the last election?
Oxley College featured Michael Jackson, so obsessed with beauty, and look where it got him?
Adjudicator Norm Stanton, retired School Principal after careful consideration of the criteria - convincing argument: manner of delivery & quality: team effort & cooperation, declared
Oxley College the Winners!
Grant Blanchard welcomed Oxley College and visitors to the BGC, congratulated the young team and presented prizes. Grant Williamson, Principal of Oxley College thanked everyone warmly and suggested that there be a re-match at another time.
Finally Geoffrey Hammond congratulated Oxley College Not only do they have brains, they also have beauty!
So the final word is: Beauty and Brains!
A light supper followed.
Special thanks to John Bryan
